Roanoke Canal Trail

The aqueduct, designed by renowned engineer Hamilton Fulton, spans 35 feet across Chockoyotte Creek and is one of the many fantastic historic structures on the Roanoke Canal Trail.In addition to the Roanoke Canal Museum, there is a 7.5-mile nature trail that follows the old Roanoke Navigation Canal bed. The western head of the Roanoke Canal Trail is the Roanoke Rapids Lake Day Use Area. The eastern head of the Roanoke Canal Trail is River Falls Park in Weldon. Along the trail explorers will discover fantastic historic structures, such as the old power canal bulkhead, stone culverts, an amazing aqueduct spanning 35 feet across Chockoyotte Creek, a Confederate cemetery, old train trestles, an formerly canal-powered cotton mill and grist mill, and a fantastic tunnel under Highway 301 painted in a river mural. The Roanoke Canal Trail has recently been designated as a site on the North Carolina Coastal Plains Birding Trail, and the trail, which can be used for hiking, biking, trail running and biking, is rich with native wildlife and plants.
