Does the idea of boats speeding across the water at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour excite you? Then don’t miss the first Roanoke Rapids Hydro Power Race, hosted by the Carolina Cup Regatta, Inc., this weekend!

Racing begins on Saturday, June 27 from Noon to 6 p.m. and again on Sunday, June 28 from 1 to 6 p.m. This is the first year in approximately 40 years that power boat racing has been held at Roanoke Rapids Lake.

The spectator area for the race will be in Roanoke Rapids Lake Park, and viewing the race is completely free to the public. The primary parking area will be at Belmont Elementary School on Bolling Road, as directed by the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, with complimentary shuttle service running from the school to the park.

Spectators can also view the race from their own boats on the lake as long as the required distance from the marked race course is maintained. North Carolina Wildlife Officers and other volunteers will enforce the safety area for the race course.

Many of the racers will bring their boats to Logan’s Roadhouse on Friday night. The public can get a sneak preview of these hydroplanes at that time.

The Roanoke Rapids Hydro Power Race is being sponsored by the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dr. Thomas Fleming DDS, PA, Eagle Home Medical Corp, Piedmont Natural Gas, Gaston Hardware, Joan’s Hair Gallery, Melody’s Hair Cuts, Northeastern Safety Supply, Rusty’s Alignment Service, Watson Eye Associates. In-kind support has been given to the race by C.D. Williams, Comfort Suites, Fred’s Boats Sales & Service, Gotta-Go Portajons, Hampton Inn, Logan’s Roadhouse, Sleep Inn, The UPS Store and Wal-Mart.

Outboard Class

Outboard boats will race in a variety of categories and classes. In the Stock Outboard class, outboard engines are not modified, and motors range from 13.2 cu in to 44 cu in. The skill level of the driver is the most important factor.

In the Modified Outboard class, the outboard engines are modified, testing both the skill level of the engine builder and the abilities of the drivers. The goal is to utilize all the horsepower in the engines, and engines range from 12.5 cu in to 62 cu in.

J Class

The J-Class is for racers ages 9-15, using the 13.2 cu in 15 hp OMC engines with restricted carburetors (making the engine roughly 8 hp) and standard propellers.

There will be numerous vendors on site for a variety of food like hamburgers, hotdogs, BBQ, snowcones, and much more! For your comfort, portable toilets will be onsite in addition to the park restrooms.
