First for Freedom Outdoor Drama

First for FreedomFirst for Freedom, our own outdoor drama, shares the story of events leading to the adoption of the Halifax Resolves, the first official declaration of independence by any colony, on April 12, 1776 during the Fourth Provincial Congress held in the river port town of Halifax, North Carolina.

Local playwright and historian Maxville B. Williams adapted the script from his novel First for Freedom. The outdoor drama was first produced in the summer of 1976 in honor of our country's bicentennial.

For the 2009 season, Director Jim Singleton has returned the drama to its original script. You will marvel at the story of a town, like many others in our country, that was torn apart with those still loyal to the Crown and those talking of revolution. In the midst of this strife is a young couple divided by politics and war.

Bring your family, friends, guest & groups to see this dramatic and inspiring story and truly celebrate Independence Day this year. Located at the amphitheatre of the Halifax County 4-H Rural Life Center on Highway 903 in Halifax (Interstate 95, Exit 168), the play will run for two weekends.

Tickets

General admission tickets are $10 each.

Seniors and groups (of 10 or more) are $8 each.

Student tickets are $5 each. Children 5 & under are free.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate or in advance at the Halifax County Visitors Center, Halifax County Arts Council Gallery, Halifax County Cooperative Extension office, Halifax County Library, Historic Halifax, Town of Halifax office or from any cast member. There is limited bench-style seating, so please bring lawn or stadium chairs if you would be more comfortable.
